Meet My Friends

They're pink, feathered and nearly as tall as I am–sad, but true! When my longtime bestie came down for the weekend, we decided the perfect activity would be to go to the Indianapolis Zoo and participate in the Flamingo Mingle. We weren't sure what to expect initially, but totally fell in love with these feathered friends and how adorably sweet they were.

So here's the funny thing about our zoo visit–it started out incredibly beautiful and sunny, and then quickly clouded up and started absolutely pouring rain. And when I say pour rain, I mean sheets of heavy heavy rain that forced us to leave the zoo early. But hey, we came, we mingled, we conquered right?

I wasn't really sure how the mingle would work, but was pumped to spend time with one of my favorite animals. Lauren and I immediately became friends with bird #74, named Gronk and a little pink lady named Squashy. It was hilarious watching the flamingos pace the gate, knowing they soon have a tasty shrimp treat awaiting them. Once they were released from their habitat they swarmed their buckets and soon found there way over to the people surrounding them to introduce themselves.

They ask you to sit with your legs crossed so you don't trip the flamingos when they come to greet you, so Lauren and I crouched down unsure of what to expect. The best way I can explain what happened next was that we were repeatedly chest bumped by sweet little Gronk who wanted to play. This guy and his friend, Squashy, took an immediate liking to Lauren and I proceeded to nibble at our hair, jewelry and the water bottles we'd taken in the zoo. At this point I was contemplating bringing them home with me and making a flamingo habitat in my back yard. Slightly strange? Yes. Slightly awesome? Double yes!

I can definitely say that this was one of the most fun animal encounters I've done and we could easily have sat there all day long. Here's to seeing you again, Gronk and Squashy!

    1. It's totally a tongue twister! It was so much fun though. I want a pet flamingo now, however, I don't think he would fare well with my super exuberant pup. Ha!
